Gloria

Now, THIS is a Christmas Carol. Boy, it beats listening to Casting Crowns choke out O Come All Ye Faithful.

The sound is so beautiful and pure. It makes contemporary worship music sound like a drunken rattling of tin cans.

And perhaps I should next break out my collection of Gregorian Chants.

Sigh. They don't write 'em like that anymore.

  1. As I am fond of saying, Palestrina knocks Chris Tomlin into a cocked hat.

  2. You've hit upon an all-time favorite choir piece of mine with 'Gloria'(Angels we have heard on high)..
I posted an accoustic guitar version here that you might enjoy!

  3. BTW, if you like this sort of thing, have you heard anything by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt?

  4. I agree, many of the contemporary renditions of hymns and Christmas songs is just awful. Some things just need to remain classics.

  5. Ira, I do indeed have some Arvo. I have Te Deum, and I think something else. My CDs are all over the place and some have never been unpacked from our last move. I'm not knowledgeable about classical music, but I have a few things here and there, and I have a lot of vinyl picked up cheap, most of which has also never been unpacked. No place to put all this stuff.

    Sling: that is lovely!

Mom: Yep. I like Josh Groban singing O Holy Night, and that's about as far as I go into the contemporary.

  6. Way better than Casting Crowns and Chris Tomlin.

I'm appalled some people in my family think chants are stupid, because they're beautiful to me. And contemporary Christian music is as exactly as you say: drunken rattling of tin cans.
