The Number 12

Yesterday at the daycare after-school program, the teacher noticed that DramaQueen was writing down a number sequence

12, 24, 36, 48

so she explained how the sequence works and how to continue it.

All evening DramaQueen, using two-and-a-half hands, added 12 to increasingly large numbers until she got to 156. Then she started over again. She was very excited and pleased as punch with herself.

I don’t know how she ran across this sequence. And why 12? That’s an unwieldy number to manipulate when you have to use your fingers to add. I don’t think she understands that you can manipulate all numbers the same way. She just really likes 12.

  1. Do you have any tape measures in the house?

There are 12 inches in a foot and large tape measures count by 12's in cumulative inches.

  3. wow. wait till she works out that 6 (her age) is half of 12 ... there will be NO STOPPING her. Now I understand Jeff's blog - I didn't when I read it, so my comment prob doesn't make much sense.

  4. That is very cool.

    You have the greatest kids!

You know, I could look at this and be a lttle jealous, that my children aren't ever going to impress foplks with their mental prowess or the physical abilities... but I still consider myself a lucky parent... My children are honest, sweet-natured, and very kind. They may not have certain gifts, but I am most pleased with who they are.

    God bless.

  6. 12 months of the year. 12 Tribes of Israel. 12 days of Christmas.

Or maybe it is simply that 12 is a great number.

My older son is a math brain too. It is like they see the world through patterns!

    Wonderful wonderful.
