I never felt like a southerner--and did not stay once I reached adulthood--but it pisses me off when folks make ignorant, snide comments about the south. I think one reason I ended up out west is that the North/South divide just isn't on folks radar out here to the extent it is back east.Karen Sapiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01952041607368514856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15524211.post-1134598257551588022005-12-14T17:10:00.000-05:002005-12-14T17:10:00.000-05:00Mary Beth: That book was formative for me--I was o...Mary Beth: That book was formative for me--I was obsessed with it for years.Bad Alicehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04540577363786819292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15524211.post-1134596546006101932005-12-14T16:42:00.000-05:002005-12-14T16:42:00.000-05:00And you are the person who reminded me about Bride...And you are the person who reminded me about Brideshead Revisited, too! But, if someone not from the South makes a negative comment about the South, I get bristly, even if I agree. So I guess you can't really take the South out.Bad Alicehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04540577363786819292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15524211.post-1134565252073351842005-12-14T08:00:00.000-05:002005-12-14T08:00:00.000-05:00South Georgia? I loved the fog opening at the beginning of the book -and I'm sure they'll have done that so well.

Dickens wrote most of his stuff to be published weekly (or was it monthly) so I'm sure it lends itself to a tv series in that respect

and the crossing sweep how does that get portrayed.

and and and

can you tell I'm excited :)see-through faithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10130170262035064482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15524211.post-1134499829874876552005-12-13T13:50:00.000-05:002005-12-13T13:50:00.000-05:00Lorna: Oh yes, I love Austen. There's a rather charming mystery series starring Jane Austen--very well done.

Kathryn: Love Wilkie Collins, too. I've read The Moonstone and The Lady in White. There are no doubt many Victorian treasures I have not unearthed. A good number of years back I was lucky enough to see an exhibit of William Morris "stuff" at The British Museum (or was it the Tate?). That was heavenly.

Oh, now I'm going to have to go back and re-read my Dickens! What's a Christmas without Dickens?

SpookyRach: And they definitely were crazy! Love them. William Morris lived quite close to our old home...
Bleak House is my absolutely favourite book, I think...The series has been OK but oversimplified, and it's sad not to have all that marvellous descriptive writing.Kathrynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09171138485811816831noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15524211.post-1134461961046479752005-12-13T03:19:00.000-05:002005-12-13T03:19:00.000-05:00Do you like Jane Austen (1775-1817) I suppose tecn...Do you like Jane Austen (1775-1817) I suppose tecnhically she's pre Victorian but I love her writings. I'm waiting for P& P to come out here - Christmas Eve- have you been to see it? The BBC series was wonderful- esp the insufferable Mr Collins, but I'm interested to see how the new film will be. I did English literature and liked Dickens too - we studied Bleak House which was a huge book and hard to get into, they have a series on tv right now which I'm hoping to see at some point!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
